Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hackathon?

At a hackathon, teams spend the weekend working on innovative software and hardware solutions to real-world problems in a community full of mentorship. You can also participate in side activities and enjoy the free food provided for the weekend.

Technical experience is not required. This is the perfect opportunity to learn and have fun with all the resources you need to work on something cool. You'll have the freedom to create a product, learn new skills, and meet new people in the Houston and JSC community.

Who can attend?

Participants of all ages may attend. However, please note that the hackathon challenges and workshops are designed for participants ages 18+.

Attendees under 18 must confirm upon registration that they have consent from a parent or guardian. If applications surpass our capacity, college graduate/undergraduate students will be given first priority. All Johnson Space Center interns and employees are guaranteed acceptance.

Regardless of your experience, education, or background, as long as you are excited about learning, building, and having fun, we’d love for you to attend!

How much experience do I need?

Absolutely zero! We want you here because you have a passion for solving problems, and you don't have to be a programmer. We’ll have workshops and mentors for everyone of all levels of expertise to learn something new.

How much does it cost?

This event is completely free for everyone. Food and swag are included.

I cannot attend in-person. Can I participate remotely?

We strongly encourage in-person participation for the full experience, since we cannot guarantee that virtual participants will be able to participate in all hackathon activities. If you are interested in virtual or hybrid hackathons, be sure to checkout SpaceApps 2024 on October 4-6, 2024 or upcoming Major League Hacking (MLH) hackathons.

Teams submitting projects must have at least one team member present to demo on Sunday from 10am-12pm, so while we cannot support all-virtual teams (including teams of one participant), you may join a partially in-person team to submit a project eligible for judging.

I don’t have a team. How do I find people to work with?

You may use the Slack (not created yet) to join a team or recruit new members to join your existing team.

If you want to work solo, that’s okay too!

What is the team limit?

The team limit is a max of five people.

I'm not a computer person. Is this for me?

Absolutely! One of our top missions for this event is to embrace everyone's strengths, whether it's software, hardware, design, or coming up with REALLY cool ideas.

What kind of challenges will there be?

Our hackathon challenges will be focused on topics such as NASA and space exploration, our journey to the Moon and Mars, and projects geared towards helping the Houston community, just to name a few.

However, while we will be offering challenge prompts that provide value to NASA’s mission, ultimately your team will be able to choose your own problem to solve that maybe nobody has thought of before!

Challenges will be released up to a week before the event to give everyone a fair start.

Do I need to be a college student?

No, this event is open for participants of all ages and backgrounds.

Do I need to register?

Register here as soon as possible so we know to expect you.

What if I have to arrive late?

While we'll miss you for opening events on Friday, you are not required to arrive during check-in if you are registered. Although we can't guarantee that there will be swag left.
